Handcrafted Ash Treasure Chest – Beauty From an Unexpected Place

Sometimes the most interesting wood comes with a story you never would have chosen.

This one-of-a-kind treasure chest is handcrafted from ash that bears the unmistakable marks of the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect that has devastated ash trees across the country. The winding trails left behind beneath the bark create incredible natural patterns throughout the wood—details that simply couldn’t be recreated by hand.

Wood like this might normally be discarded. Instead, I decided to see what could be made from it.

The result is a truly unique little treasure chest that turns a small piece of an otherwise devastating story into something beautiful and useful. The beetle-created patterns remain visible throughout the box, making the wood itself the centerpiece of the design.

The hinged lid features a rustic pull made from a piece of Pacific Coast beach wood, adding another naturally weathered element to the piece. Inside, both the bottom of the box and the underside of the lid are lined with super-soft grey felt, giving jewelry, keepsakes and other small treasures a protected place to rest.

The entire box is hand-finished with three coats of all-natural tung oil from Tallahassee Tung Oil, which brings out the color, grain and unusual markings of the ash while preserving the natural feel of the wood.

No two pieces of beetle-marked ash will ever look exactly alike. What began as damage to a tree became the defining feature of this box—and a chance to give a beautiful piece of wood a second life instead of letting it go to waste.
