Handmade Alder & Walnut Dice Tray with Felt Lining & Storage

A good game night deserves a little handmade character.

I built this dice tray from locally grown Oregon alder and walnut, with soft felt inside and a solid feel in your hands. The lighter alder forms the tray, while dark walnut splines reinforce the corners and add a contrasting detail.

Room to roll and keep things organized

The main rolling area measures approximately 12" × 9", giving your dice room to tumble. The 2"-tall sides help keep rolls contained, and the soft felt cushions their landing and quiets the clatter.

Along the bottom, a separate felt-lined compartment measures approximately 9" × 2½". It's a handy place to keep spare dice, tokens, and small game pieces within reach, without crowding your rolling space.

Solid wood, thoughtful details

I used ¾"-thick wood for the walls to give this tray a substantial feel. The walnut corner splines add strength as well as contrast, a small woodworking detail that makes the piece feel at home on the table even between games.

Both woods were grown locally in Oregon. I made and finished the tray in my Eugene workshop, applying tung oil to bring out the grain, followed by a polyurethane topcoat for added protection. Natural variations in the wood give it its own character.
